Deepawali, also called Diwali, is one of the most important festivals in India. It is known as the festival of lights and is celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and some Buddhists. The word "Deepawali" comes from the Sanskrit words "deep" meaning lamp and "avali" meaning row, which together mean "a row of lights." The festival symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. It usually takes place between October and November during the Hindu month of Kartika and lasts for five days. Each day of Deepawali has its own meaning. People clean their homes, wear new clothes, decorate with diyas (oil lamps), and make colorful rangolis. The main day is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. Many also worship Saraswati and Kubera for knowledge and prosperity. In some places, it marks the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya, and in others, it remembers Krishna’s victory over the demon Narakasura. Diwali is also a time for family gatherings, sharing sweets (mithai), bursting fireworks, and exchanging gifts. It brings joy and togetherness.
