Bhai Dooj, also known as Bhai Tika, Bhai Beej, Bhau Beej, or Bhai Phonta, is a beautiful Hindu festival that celebrates the strong bond between brothers and sisters. It is observed on the second day of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) in the month of Kartika, just after Diwali. On this day, sisters invite their brothers for a special meal, which often includes their favorite sweets and dishes. Sisters perform an aarti for their brothers and apply a red tika (mark) on their foreheads while praying for their long and happy life. In return, brothers give gifts or money and promise to protect their sisters. In different regions of India, Bhai Dooj is celebrated in unique ways. In Bengal, it's known as Bhai Phonta; in South India, it's called Yama Dwitiya. In Maharashtra and Haryana, sisters who don’t have brothers worship the Moon as their brother, sending their prayers through Chandamama (Moon God). Some also apply mehendi and worship using a dry coconut (gola) during the ritual. Bhai Dooj is not just about rituals but also about love, trust, and the emotional connection between siblings, no matter the distance.
