About Ananta Chaturdashi

Ananta Chaturdashi is a Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his Ananta (infinite) form. It is celebrated on the 14th day of the waxing moon during the Bhadrapada month, usually in August or September. This festival is also the last day of the 10-day Ganesh Chaturthi celebration, when devotees immerse Lord Ganesha’s idols in water with great devotion and joy. The story behind Ananta Chaturdashi comes from the Mahabharata. A woman named Sushila joined a group of women performing the Ananta fast. They tied a sacred thread with 14 knots on their wrists, made offerings, and prayed to Ananta for protection and prosperity. Sushila’s husband, Kaundinya, did not believe in the power of the fast and threw the thread in fire. After this, they faced great misfortunes. Kaundinya later realized his mistake and prayed for forgiveness. Lord Ananta appeared and forgave him, asking him to observe the fast for 14 years. On this day, people tie the 14-knotted thread on their arms — men on the right and women on the left. They prepare special foods like puris and puas and offer them with panchamrita. Devotees also keep a fast, seeking blessings for peace, happiness, and prosperity.
