Varaha Jayanti Story

Learn the sacred story behind Varaha Jayanti, the celebration of Lord Vishnu’s boar incarnation, symbolizing the victory of good over evil and the protection of dharma.

Varaha Jayanti Story in English

In the Dashavatar series, Lord Vishnu's third incarnation, the Varaha Avatar, is described. It is believed that both love and hostility toward Lord Vishnu can lead to blessings. Those who love him selflessly attain Vaikuntha, and even those who oppose him ultimately receive his grace and reach Vishnu Lok. The story begins with the birth of two demonic twins, Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu, from Diti, the wife of Sage Kashyapa. Their birth filled the Earth with negative energy, and their actions caused immense turmoil. They performed severe penance to please Brahma and obtained the boon of invincibility, ensuring they could not be killed by any human being. With this power, they unleashed chaos across the realms. Hiranyaksha decided to conquer the three worlds and marched toward Indralok with a mace. Terrified, the gods fled Indralok. Hiranyaksha then went to Varuna’s city and challenged him for a fight. Varuna refused, suggesting that only Lord Vishnu could match Hiranyaksha’s strength. Seeking Vishnu, Hiranyaksha encountered Narada, who informed him that Vishnu had assumed the form of a boar (Varaha) to rescue Earth from the depths of the ocean. Hiranyaksha followed Vishnu to Rasatal and saw the boar lifting Earth on its tusks. Enraged, Hiranyaksha insulted the Varaha and threatened to kill him. Despite Hiranyaksha’s taunts, Vishnu remained calm and focused on placing Earth in its rightful position. Once Earth was secure, Vishnu confronted Hiranyaksha. He challenged him to fight, saying that true strength lies in action, not mere words. Furious, Hiranyaksha attacked Vishnu. Using his Sudarshan Chakra, Vishnu destroyed Hiranyaksha’s weapons and struck him with a powerful blow that killed him. With Hiranyaksha’s death, Earth was freed from his tyranny, and he attained Vaikuntha, becoming a gatekeeper there. After completing his mission of saving Earth and defeating Hiranyaksha, Lord Vishnu’s Varaha Avatar disappeared. This story highlights Lord Vishnu's compassion and justice, even in adversity.
