Every month, there are two Chaturthi days dedicated to Lord Ganesha. The Chaturthi after Amavasya during the waxing phase of the moon is called Vinayaka Chaturthi. Similarly, the Chaturthi after Purnima during the waning phase is called Sankashti Chaturthi. In Hinduism, Lord Ganesha is worshipped first.

Special things to keep in mind on Vinayaka Chaturthi:

It is forbidden to see the moon on Vinayaka Chaturthi. According to beliefs, seeing the moon on this day brings bad luck. So, avoid seeing the moon on this day. Also, do not use basil (Tulsi) during the puja of Lord Ganesha. It is said that doing so can anger Lord Ganesha. Moreover, when installing Lord Ganesha at home on Vinayaka Chaturthi, do not leave him alone. There should be someone at home. Also, be careful not to see the back of the idol of Lord Ganesha during installation, as it brings poverty.

During the puja of Lord Ganesha, when you light a lamp, do not change its position repeatedly, and do not place the lamp on Lord Ganesha's seat. Also, on the day of Vinayaka Chaturthi, avoid consuming salt during fasting. Do not wear black clothes on Vinayaka Chaturthi because black colour is considered negative.

Furthermore, if you are observing a fast on this day, avoid using offensive language towards anyone. Doing so diminishes the merit of the fast. It is advised not to disrespect elders at any time, but especially remember this on Vinayaka Chaturthi, otherwise, the benefits of the puja will not be attained. Procedure for the Worship of Vinayaka Chaturthi

Preparation:

  • Clean the worship area thoroughly.
  • Arrange for all necessary items such as an idol or picture of Lord Ganesha, flowers, incense sticks, lamps, fruits, sweets, and sacred water.
  • Take a bath and wear clean clothes.

Setting Up the Idol:

  • Place the idol or picture of Lord Ganesha on a clean platform or altar facing east or north.
  • Decorate the idol with flowers and garlands.

Invocation (Pran Pratishtha):

  • Invoke Lord Ganesha by chanting mantras and inviting him to reside in the idol or picture.
  • Offer water, flowers, and akshat (rice grains) while reciting the invocation mantras.

Offerings (Puja):

  • Light incense sticks and lamps while chanting prayers.
  • Offer flowers, fruits, sweets, and other delicacies to Lord Ganesha.
  • Pour sacred water (Tirtha) on the idol or picture.
  • Recite Vinayaka Chaturthi prayers and hymns dedicated to Lord Ganesha.

Aarti:

  • Perform the aarti by waving a lit lamp in front of the idol or picture in a clockwise direction.
  • Sing or recite the Aarti songs praising Lord Ganesha.

Prayers and Mantras:

  • Offer heartfelt prayers to Lord Ganesha, seeking his blessings, wisdom, and removal of obstacles.
  • Recite mantras dedicated to Lord Ganesha such as the Ganesh Gayatri Mantra or any other preferred chants.

Distribution of Prasad:

  • Distribute the prasad (offerings) among family members and guests as a token of blessings from Lord Ganesha.
