Why is Vat Savitri Fast observed?

According to ancient beliefs, a woman who observes Vat Savitri Fast is blessed with a long life for her husband, and her marital bliss remains intact forever. Women who wish to have children are blessed with good offspring as a result of this fast, and prosperity prevails in the family.

Significance

Vat Savitri Fast is a festival that ensures the eternal good fortune of every married woman. Centuries ago, Savitri observed this fast and compelled Yama, the god of death, to bring her dead husband Satyavan back to life. Since then, it has been a tradition for married women to observe this fast for the long life of their husbands. On Vat Savitri Fast, women worship Satyavan, Savitri, and Yama. Additionally, all married women adorn themselves with 16 adornments and worship the Banyan tree.

Why Do We Worship Banyan Tree?

On the new moon day of Jyeshtha, Savitri revived her dead husband Satyavan under a Banyan tree. Hence, the Banyan tree is worshipped on this day, and the festival is known as Vat-Savitri.

According to Hindu scriptures, Brahma resides at the base of the Banyan tree, Vishnu in the middle, and Lord Shiva in the front. Additionally, Gautama Buddha also attained enlightenment under a Banyan tree.

There is also a belief that sitting under the Banyan tree, performing worship, and listening to the fast story fulfills all desires.

‘From a scientific perspective, the Banyan tree purifies the environment by destroying harmful gases’.

The Banyan tree is very large and can remain green for hundreds of years. Therefore, it is considered a symbol of longevity and good fortune.

So, this was information related to the significance of Vat Savitri Fast. We hope your fast is successful, and you are blessed with eternal good fortune.

The story of Vat Savitri Fast

The story of Vat Savitri Fast revolves around the unwavering devotion and love of Savitri for her husband, Satyavan. Savitri, a princess, chose Satyavan, a noble but poor prince, as her husband despite knowing he had a short life span. They lived happily in the forest, cherishing their love.

As predicted, one day, Satyavan fell gravely ill and died under a Banyan tree. Deeply devoted, Savitri refused to leave his side and began praying fervently(with great intensity of feeling). When Yama, the god of death, arrived to take Satyavan's soul, Savitri followed him, pleading for her husband's life.

Moved by her devotion, Yama granted her three boons but excluded Satyavan’s life. Cleverly, Savitri asked for her father-in-law's sight, her own fertility, and eventually, her husband's life, ensuring Satyavan would live. Yama, impressed by her wisdom and dedication, restored Satyavan to life.

Savitri's perseverance and loyalty symbolize the strength of a devoted wife. Thus, married women observe Vat Savitri Fast, worshipping the Banyan tree where Savitri's devotion triumphed, praying for their husbands' long lives and family prosperity. This Fast celebrates love, faith, and the power of unwavering commitment.
