Learn the divine story of Shitala Saptami Fast, observed with devotion and rituals dedicated to Goddess Shitala, believed to bring protection from illness and grant blessings of good health.
Long ago, an elderly woman and her two daughters-in-law observed the Shitala Mata Vrat. However, both daughters-in-law cooked fresh food in the morning, which upset their mother-in-law as it is customary to offer stale food to Shitala Mata on this day. Soon after, both daughters-in-law faced the tragic loss of their children. Seeing this, the mother-in-law became angry and told them to leave the house. She said they could return only if their children were revived. Carrying their children’s bodies, the daughters-in-law left the house and stopped to rest on the way. There, they encountered two sisters named Ori and Shitala, who were suffering due to lice in their hair. Feeling compassionate, the daughters-in-law cleaned their heads, relieving them of their discomfort. In return, Shitala and Ori blessed them, saying, “May your lap be filled with children.” Hearing this, the daughters-in-law looked at their children’s bodies and began crying. Shitala Mata explained that they were receiving the consequences of their actions. The daughters-in-law realized their mistake of cooking fresh food on Shitala Ashtami and apologized sincerely. They vowed never to repeat the mistake. Pleased with their repentance, Shitala Mata brought their children back to life. From then on, the entire village began celebrating Shitala Mata Vrat. This story signifies the importance of observing Shitala Mata Vrat with devotion and following traditions. May Shitala Mata bless you and remove all your sorrows!
