According to the Puranas, Lord Shani is the son of the Sun God. It is believed that the Sun God married Goddess Sangya, the daughter of Vishwakarma. Goddess Sangya deeply loved her husband, Surya. However, the intensity of Surya's radiance was unbearable for her, but she always tried to endure it. They had three children named Vaivasvata Manu, Yama, and Yamuna. Despite this, Sangya still wished to reduce her husband's fiery radiance somehow.

Goddess Sangya decided to perform penance for this purpose. However, she was also concerned about who would care for her children and serve her husband if she immersed herself in penance(self-punishment). She feared that if Lord Surya learned about her decision to perform penance, he would feel guilty because of his radiance and might not even allow her to perform penance.

Sangya, who always fulfilled her duties as a wife with utmost devotion, did not want to make her husband aware of her suffering and make him unhappy. Therefore, she used her powers to create her own shadow. In this way, Goddess Sangya entrusted her shadow with the responsibility of her husband and three children and went to her father's house.

When Sangya told her father, Vishwakarma, about her suffering and the reason for returning from her husband's house, he disagreed with her decision to perform penance and suggested she go back to her husband's house. However, Goddess Sangya did not listen to her father and went to a nearby forest to perform rigorous penance.

Meanwhile, Lord Surya had no idea that the Sangya with him was her shadow(Chhaya). The shadow, fulfilling her duties as a wife, became pregnant and gave birth to three children: Shani, Tapti, and Vishti (Bhadra). Thus, Shani Dev was born as the son of Lord Surya and Chhaya (the shadow). But when Surya discovered that the shadow was not Sangya, he became extremely angry and refused to accept Shani as his son. This is why, despite being father and son, Shani and Surya harbored animosity towards each other.
