Learn the divine story behind Shraddha, a ritual of remembrance and gratitude performed to pay homage to departed souls and ensure their eternal peace.
You might have heard about Pitru Paksha or the sixteen days of Shraddha, but did you know it has a connection to the Mahabharata? The story begins with the death of Karna, the generous warrior, during the Mahabharata war. Due to his lifelong acts of charity, he was sent to heaven, where he was welcomed warmly. However, during mealtime, he was served gold, silver, and jewels instead of food. Confused, Karna asked Lord Indra why this was happening. Indra explained that while Karna was unmatched in his generosity, he had only donated material possessions like gold and silver during his life. He had never offered food to his ancestors, which left them unsatisfied. As a result, Karna was denied the pleasure of food in heaven. Karna realized his mistake and pleaded for a solution. Indra granted him sixteen days to return to Earth and offer food to his ancestors through rituals like Pind Daan and Tarpan. He told Karna that by satisfying his ancestors, he would also enjoy the comforts of heaven, including the pleasure of food. Karna followed Indra’s advice, offering food to his ancestors during these sixteen days. Thus, the period of Pitru Paksha became significant. During these sixteen days, humans are given the opportunity to offer food to their departed ancestors, complete their Pind Daan and Tarpan rituals, and honor their memory.
