Learn the divine story of Narmada Jayanti, the day that marks the birth of the holy Narmada River. Devotees perform river puja, take holy dips, and seek spiritual cleansing, peace, and protection.
According to ancient scriptures, when the gods defeated a demon named Andhakasur, they unintentionally committed many sins during the battle. Burdened by guilt, they wanted to atone for their actions but couldn’t find a solution. They remembered Lord Shiva and realized only he could help them. So, all the gods, including Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma, went to Lord Shiva for guidance. The gods explained their sins and pleaded with Shiva for a way to cleanse themselves. At that time, Lord Shiva was deep in meditation. When he opened his eyes, a radiant droplet fell from his gaze and landed on the Mekal mountain in Amarkantak. From this droplet, a beautiful maiden was born. She was named Narmada by Lord Vishnu and the other gods. Lord Shiva created the Narmada River at their request to cleanse the gods of their sins and purify the world.
