Learn the divine story of Ashadha Amavasya Fast, when devotees offer prayers to ancestors, perform holy baths, and seek peace, protection, and freedom from past karmas through fasting and devotion.
Once, a Brahmin lived with his wife. Both were devoted worshippers of Lord Vishnu and spent most of their time in prayer and devotion. Their house was prosperous, but they were deeply saddened because they had no children. One day, the Brahmin decided to go to the forest to perform penance and pray for a child. Years passed as the Brahmin engaged in intense penance, but he received no blessings. Disheartened, he decided to end his life. As he prepared to hang himself from a tree, Goddess Sukha Amavasya appeared before him. The goddess told the Brahmin, “You are destined to remain childless for seven lifetimes, but I grant you a boon of two daughters. Name one Amavasya and the other Poonam. Instruct your wife to observe the Sukha Amavasya vrat for one year and donate a bowl of rice with offerings on Amavasya.” The Brahmin returned home and shared everything with his wife. Following the goddess’s instructions, his wife began observing the Sukha Amavasya vrat. Soon, they were blessed with two daughters, named Amavasya and Poonam. As they grew up, the Brahmin married them off. Amavasya was devoted to religious practices, while Poonam ignored godly devotion. Amavasya’s home was filled with wealth and happiness, but Poonam’s house was plagued by poverty. When Amavasya learned about her sister’s struggles, she brought gifts and advised her to observe the Sukha Amavasya vrat for a year, following all the rituals properly. She explained the process, emphasizing the donation of a bowl of rice on Amavasya. Poonam followed her sister’s advice, and within a year, her home was filled with prosperity and she was blessed with a son. Thus, it is believed that anyone who properly observes the Sukha Amavasya vrat will experience peace and prosperity in their home.
