Learn the sacred story behind Annapurna Jayanti, where devotees worship the goddess of food and abundance, seeking blessings for prosperity, health, and fulfillment.
According to a legend, there was a time when a famine struck the Earth, leading to a severe shortage of food. People suffered greatly from hunger, and many even lost their lives. Witnessing this crisis, Brahma and Vishnu awakened Lord Shiva from his deep meditation and informed him about the dire situation, requesting his help. To resolve the issue, Lord Shiva observed the Earth and then Goddess Parvati appeared as Annapurna, the goddess of food. Taking the form of a beggar, Lord Shiva approached Goddess Annapurna and requested food. She generously gave it to him, and he distributed it among the starving people. This ended the famine on Earth. It is believed that Goddess Parvati appeared in the form of Annapurna on the full moon day of the Margashirsha month. Since then, this day has been celebrated as Annapurna Jayanti.
