It is a story of ancient times. In a small village, a Vaishya named Dharamdas lived with his family. He was poor and always worried about the food and maintenance of his family. There were many members in his family, but there was no permanent source of income.

Dharamdas was a person of very religious nature. He was always worshipping the God and served Brahmins and the needy. One day, he heard the importance of Akshaya Tritiya fast from a saint. The saint said, "Whoever keeps fast on this day and does charity, attains happiness and prosperity in the next birth. Doing any auspicious work on this day bring God's blessings."

Hearing this, Dharamdas decided to observe the fast of Akshaya Tritiya. When the holy date arrived, he woke up early in the morning, took a bath in the Ganga and worshiped the gods and goddesses ritually. According to his capacity, he offered water filled pitchers, fans, barley, sattu, rice, salt, wheat, jaggery, ghee, curd, gold and clothes to God and donated them to Brahmins.

On seeing this donation of Dharamdas, his family became worried. His wife said, "If you give away all this in charity, how will we survive?" But Dharamdas did not listen them and completed his fast . He said, "Nothing is better than charity. God will protect us."

Time passed and every year Dharamdas kept fasting, worshipping and donating on Akshaya Tritiya. His faith and devotion was so strong that despite old age and diseases, he never left this fast.

After his death, as a result of his good deeds, Dharamdas was born in the next birth as the noble and just king of Kushavati Nagari. He became a very wealthy and charitable king. His subjects were happy and prosperous.

One day, Lord Vishnu appeared in the dream of the king and said, "O great king! You have become so rich and glorious in this birth only because of the Akshaya Tritiya fast and donations in your previous birth. The donations and good deeds done on the day of Akshaya Tritiya never get destroyed, it gives fruits for birth after birth."

After the dream, the king pledged that he would tell the importance of Akshaya Tritiya in his kingdom and make charity compulsory on this day. By his order, his kingdom performed Maha Yagya every year on Akshaya Tritiya and donated food, clothes and money to the needy.

It is said that God himself appeared in the form of a Brahmin in his yagya. The king's kingdom remained full of happiness and prosperity for a long time.

From this story, we learn that the donation and fast done on Akshaya Tritiya gives us happiness and prosperity throughout life and in the next birth as well.
