Learn the divine story of the First Shraddha, where tradition began with a heartfelt offering to ancestors, setting the foundation for this holy ritual of remembrance and blessings.
The story of the first Shraddha is linked to the Mahabharata era. During this time, Sage Atri taught Maharishi Nimi about the practice of Shraddha. Upon learning about it, Maharishi Nimi performed the first Shraddha. Gradually, other sages and people of all classes also started performing Shraddha. For years, the ancestors (Pitras) consumed the food offered during Shraddha and were satisfied. However, continuous consumption of the offerings caused them to suffer from indigestion. Due to this ailment, the ancestors faced great discomfort and approached Lord Brahma for relief. Moved by their prayers, Brahma said, "Agni Dev (the Fire God) will help you." As per Brahma's command, Agni Dev assured the ancestors, "From now on, I will partake in the food offered during Shraddha along with you. My presence will cure your indigestion." This delighted the ancestors, and from that time onward, the first portion of the Shraddha offerings was dedicated to Agni. This practice brought relief to the ancestors from their ailment. It is believed that after performing havan with the offerings, the Pinddaan (ritual offerings) dedicated to the ancestors cannot be defiled by Brahma Rakshas (malignant spirits).
