Learn the divine story of Bhadrapada Purnima Fast, where devotees perform rituals, offer prayers, and seek blessings for harmony, health, and fulfillment of wishes.
In ancient times, during the Dwapar Yuga, Mother Yashoda once asked Lord Krishna to suggest a Fast (fast) that could ensure women on Earth would not have to fear widowhood and one that would fulfill all their desires. Smiling, Lord Krishna narrated the story of a Fast called the "32 Purnima Fast," which could bestow unshakable fortune and increase devotion toward Lord Shiva. Mother Yashoda then asked if anyone on Earth had performed this Fast. Lord Krishna explained that there was once a prosperous city named Kartika ruled by King Chandrahas. In the same city lived a wealthy and happy Brahmin named Dhaneshwar with his kind and beautiful wife, Roopvati. Despite their wealth, the couple was troubled because they had no children. One day, a yogi arrived in their city and collected alms from every household, except from Roopvati’s house. The yogi chose not to take alms from their house and went to the riverbank to eat his food peacefully. Feeling insulted, Dhaneshwar asked the yogi why he did not accept alms from their home. The yogi explained that alms from a childless home are considered impure and bring impurity to those who accept them. Hearing this, Dhaneshwar became very upset and asked the yogi for a solution to their childlessness. The yogi advised Dhaneshwar to worship Goddess Chandi. Following his advice, Dhaneshwar went to the forest and began his prayers. Pleased by his devotion, Goddess Chandi appeared on the 16th day and granted him a boon. She said he would have a son, but the boy would only live for 16 years. She also revealed that observing the "32 Purnima Fast" would extend the child’s life. She instructed Dhaneshwar to climb a mango tree, pick its fruit, and give it to his wife after explaining everything to her. She should eat the fruit after bathing and meditating on Lord Shiva. Dhaneshwar followed the instructions, and soon his wife became pregnant. They were blessed with a son. By observing the 32 Purnima Fast with dedication, their son’s life was extended, bringing them immense joy and fulfillment.
