Mahalakshmi Temple in Indore is one of the city’s most revered temples, dedicated to Goddess Mahalakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth, fortune, and prosperity. Located in the heart of the city, this temple holds immense spiritual importance for devotees who visit to seek blessings for abundance and happiness. The temple is known for its traditional architecture adorned with intricate carvings, vibrant idols, and a peaceful sanctum that radiates divine energy. During Diwali, the temple comes alive with spectacular decorations and lights, symbolizing the arrival of prosperity and joy. Built several decades ago, the Mahalakshmi Temple has been a center of faith and devotion for locals and tourists alike. The serene atmosphere, devotional chants, and the fragrance of incense create a spiritually uplifting experience. Whether you visit for prayer or peace of mind, this temple offers a divine retreat amidst the bustling city life.
One of the historic religious destinations in Indore, Mahalakshmi Temple is located in Rajwada, the heart of the city. Devotees offer rice at this temple and take a part of it back with them in the form of ‘mannat’. This rice is kept in lockers at home and in cashboxes at shops and businesses, wishing for fortune and abundance. This tradition has continued since the establishment of the temple and is a symbol of its glory.
Mahalakshmi Temple was founded in 1833 by Raja Ravi Rav Holkar of the Holkar Dynasty. At that time, there was no big temple and the idol was kept in an ancient house. During Navratri and Diwali, large crowds gathered here to offer prayers to Goddess Mahalakshmi. The Holkars themselves sought the Goddess’s blessings before opening their treasures — a tradition that continues even today.
On Diwali, the temple opens at 3 AM and 11 priests perform a special Abhishek for Goddess Lakshmi, followed by a divine Shringaar and Maha-Aarti. Devotees offer yellow rice and invite the Goddess into their homes, believing her presence brings happiness and prosperity. The temple also hosts a five-day festival from Dhanteras to Bhai Dooj, attracting lakhs of devotees.
Originally built entirely with wood, the Mahalakshmi Temple was a three-storeyed structure until 1933. It was restored in 1942 and renovated again in 2011. The sanctum houses a 21-inch idol of Goddess Mahalakshmi on a raised platform, surrounded by eight marble pillars. Idols of Ganesh, Riddhi, and Siddhi are also present. Inspired by the Mahalakshmi Temple in Mumbai, the architecture reflects the Maratha style with detailed carvings and inscriptions.
