Built in 1875 by Ahilyabai Holkar’s loyal devotee, Shri Dadhich, this temple is famous for its colossal idol of Lord Ganesha, which stands approximately 25 feet tall from crown to foot—making it one of the largest Ganesh idols in the world. The idol is made using an extraordinary mixture of limestone, jaggery, and traditional materials like bricks, along with rare elements such as soil from seven holy places and water from sacred rivers. This unique composition adds to the temple’s sacredness and mystique. The temple is a major pilgrimage center, attracting devotees seeking blessings for prosperity and the removal of obstacles. During Ganesh Chaturthi, the temple becomes a hub of grand celebrations filled with chants, lights, and devotion. Bada Ganpati Temple is not only a religious landmark but also an integral part of Indore’s cultural heritage, representing the city’s deep spiritual roots and devotion to Lord Ganesha.
Bada Ganpati Temple is one of the most famous temples in Indore. It is especially known for having the tallest idol of Lord Ganesha in Asia, which gives the temple its name Bada means big. The temple is a major religious site and attracts thousands of devotees and tourists every year.
The temple’s origin is tied to a divine dream. A member of the Dadhich family in Indore dreamt of Lord Ganesha and felt blessed. Inspired by this dream, the temple was built in 1875, and it took three years to complete the construction.
The temple is famous not only for the size of the idol but also for its deep spiritual importance. The idol is given a new ‘chola’ (holy covering) four times a year, a ritual that takes 15 days to complete. The chola is made using 15 kg of ghee and 25 kg of sindoor (vermillion). Devotees believe that praying here with a pure heart brings success and good fortune. People from across India and even other countries come to seek the blessings of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles.
As soon as you enter the temple, you will be amazed by the massive idol of Lord Ganesha. The idol is 25 feet tall and stands on a 14-foot-high platform. It was made by skilled artisans from Rajasthan, using sacred soil and water from pilgrimage places like Ujjain, Ayodhya, Mathura, Varanasi, and more. In addition, the idol contains gold, silver, nine precious gems (Navratna), and Ashtadhatu (a mix of eight metals). Since sindoor is very dear to Lord Ganesha, the idol is often washed and decorated with this bright red powder.
