Learn the sacred story of Skandamata, the fifth form of Goddess Durga, who is revered for her nurturing nature, motherhood, and her role as the protector of her children and devotees.
According to mythology, the demon Tarakasur performed intense penance to please Lord Brahma. Satisfied with his devotion, Brahma appeared before Tarakasur, who requested the boon of immortality. Brahma explained that anyone born on Earth must face death and could not grant him immortality. Disappointed, Tarakasur instead asked that his death be possible only at the hands of Lord Shiva's son. Tarakasur believed this would ensure his safety since Lord Shiva was unlikely to marry and have a child. Brahma granted this boon and disappeared. With this boon, Tarakasur began terrorizing the Earth and heaven, causing distress to everyone. The gods, troubled by his tyranny, approached Lord Shiva and requested his help. Lord Shiva eventually married Goddess Parvati and became the father of Kartikeya. Later, Lord Kartikeya grew up and defeated Tarakasur in battle, bringing an end to his reign of terror. It is believed that Goddess Skandamata is Kartikeya's divine mother.
