Dhanvantari Mantra

In Sanatan Dharma, Lord Dhanvantari is considered an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. On the day of Dhanteras, worship of Lord Dhanvantari, the 12th incarnation of Lord Vishnu, is performed. Dhanteras falls on the 13th day of the bright half of the Kartik month, which is also the birth date of Lord Dhanvantari. According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Dhanvantari is known as the creator of Ayurveda and the divine physician of the gods. He is regarded as the god who grants health and healing.

Story of Lord Dhanvantari

According to mythological beliefs, Lord Dhanvantari emerged from the ocean during the churning of the sea (Samudra Manthan). He appeared with a pot of nectar (amrit), and a battle between the gods and demons ensued to claim the nectar. This story is mentioned in various scriptures such as the Bhagavad Gita, Mahabharata, Vishnu Purana, and Agni Purana. Another story mentions that in the royal family of Kashi, a king named Dhanv worshipped Lord Ajja and received a son named Dhanvantari as a blessing. This is considered the second birth of the Lord Dhanvantari from the ocean churning. Lord Dhanvantari is considered the originator of Ayurveda. He studied various plants and their effects, both good and bad, and shared this knowledge. Lord Dhanvantari wrote several texts, one of which is the Dhanvantari Samhita, the foundational text of Ayurveda. The great sage Sushruta, who is regarded as the father of surgery, learned the science of medicine from Lord Dhanvantari. The greatest wealth in life is a healthy body, and with this in mind, Lord Dhanvantari is worshipped on Dhanteras for both wealth and health. Lord Dhanvantari is depicted with four arms. In one hand, he holds an Ayurvedic text, in another an herbal pot, in another healing herbs, and in the fourth a conch shell. He blesses beings with health and wellbeing. Therefore, on Dhanteras, people worship Lord Dhanvantari to seek both financial wealth and health.
