This festival lasts for four days, during which people worship the Sun God and Chhathi Maiya. It is believed that observing Chhath Puja brings blessings of happiness, prosperity, good health, and children. Offering Arghya to the Sun God is very important during Chhath Puja. While chanting these mantras during the offering, the Sun God is believed to become pleased quickly.

Chhath Puja Rituals

Chhath Puja is a four-day festival. Each day has a special ritual: Day 1 – Bath and Eat The first day of Chhath Puja is called Nahay Khay. On this day, people clean their houses and take a bath in a river or pond. They bring some water home to cook food. Devotees eat only one meal, which includes split chickpeas and rice. Day 2 – Fasting and Special Meal The second day is called Kharna. Devotees do not eat or drink anything the whole day. In the evening, after sunset, they eat kheer (a sweet dish made with jaggery and sugarcane juice). Day 3 – Evening Offering to the Sun The third day is called Sandhya Arghya. On this day, devotees prepare special prasad like Thekua (a sweet wheat snack) and Kachvaniya (rice laddoo). Male family members take a bamboo basket filled with coconut, fruits, and other puja items to the riverbank. In the evening, they offer water to the setting sun and pray. Day 4 – Morning Offering to the Sun The fourth and last day is called Usha Arghya. Devotees wake up early in the morning and go to the riverbank before sunrise. They offer water to the rising sun and pray. After the prayer, they share prasad with family and friends.
