Situated on the banks of the Yamuna River in Prayagraj, the renowned Takshakeshwar Tirth is the solitary Takshak Tirth in the world. Currently, it is located in the Dariyabad area. In Prayagraj, this place is also known as "Bada Shivala."

According to the 82nd Adhyaya of the Prayag Mahatmya of the Patalkhand of the Padma Purana, the history of the Takshakeshwar Tirth dates back more than 5,000 years.

According to a mythological legend, when the serpent Takshak had bitten King Parikshit, these five idols were installed as a part of his atonement. It was also given boon that anyone who visits this temple for darshan or performs worship here, their entire family will be protected from snakebite.

Another mythological tale suggests that after being expelled from Mathura by Lord Krishna, Takshak took refuge at this very place, known as Takshak Kund. It is stated in scriptures that Takshakeshwar Tirth in Prayagraj is the primary location for remedies related to the Kaal Sarp Yoga, Rahu's Mahadasha, Nag Dosha, and protection from snake bites.
