The temple of Lord Vishnu located in Mathura is known as Shri Dirgha Vishnu Mandir and is believed to date back to the era of Lord Krishna. The idol of Lord Vishnu installed here is considered unique and unmatched anywhere else in India. It is believed that devotees who bow here with sincere faith have their sorrows removed directly by Shri Hari himself. It is also believed that unmarried girls who observe 16 Monday fasts and worship Lord Vishnu here are blessed with a suitable life partner, removal of marriage obstacles, and happiness of progeny.
References to Shri Dirgha Vishnu Mandir are found in Varaha Purana, Narada Purana, and the Srimad Bhagavad Gita. According to the Puranas, Lord Vishnu states that there is no place across earth, heaven, or the netherworld that is dearer to Him than Mathura. The temple is believed to have been established around 4500 years ago to commemorate Lord Krishna’s six-armed form and to protect the sacred Yamuna Prayag. The deity here represents the cosmic form of Lord Krishna revealed during the slaying of Kansa.
