According to a popular legend, after the sacrifice of Sati and the profound grief of Lord Shiva, he immersed himself in severe penance in the Himalayas. As a result, numerous obstacles began to affect the functioning of the universe. At that time, under the orders of Lord Brahma, Kamadeva (the God of Love) and Rati (the Goddess of Love) aimed their love arrows at Lord Shiva to disrupt his meditation. Lord Shiva, in his anger, opened his third eye and emitted flames that reduced Kamadeva to ashes.
Seeing Rati's extreme sorrow, Lord Shiva granted her a boon, restoring Kamadeva as Ananga (Bodiless). He also ordered Kamadeva to establish a Shiva Lingam and perform worship in Mahakal Vana, which is now known as Ujjain. Kamadeva, in his formless state, installed the Shiva Lingam, which is why it is known as Manakameshwar or Kamameshwar. It is believed that worshiping Manakameshwar Mahadev frees devotees from financial debts, brings prosperity, and grants them a healthy and long life.
