Kalighat Mandir, located in Kolkata, West Bengal, is one of the 51 Shaktipeethas of Hindu Dharma and is considered an extremely important pilgrimage site. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali, who is worshipped as the Goddess of power, energy and destruction. According to mythological beliefs, the toe of Goddess Sati’s right foot (according to some beliefs, her fingers) fell here when Lord Shiva was carrying her body during his Tandava. Because of this, the site is regarded as one of the most sacred Shaktipeethas. The temple houses the fierce form of Maa Kali. In this idol, Maa Kali is depicted standing on the chest of Lord Shiva, wearing a garland of skulls around her neck, holding weapons and severed heads in her hands, with skulls tied around her waist. Her tongue protrudes outward with drops of blood shown dripping from it. Notably, the tongue of Maa Kali in the idol is made of gold.
The present structure of the temple was built under the patronage of the Sabarna Roy Choudhury family and Babu Kaliprasad Dutta. Construction began in 1798 and was completed in 1809. Kalighat Mandir also holds immense religious and cultural significance. For centuries, devotees have visited this temple to fulfil their wishes and seek divine blessings. Worshipping Maa Kali here is believed to free devotees from fear, evil and negative energies while bringing peace, prosperity and success in life.
