The Masik Durga Ashtami that falls in the month of Shravan, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva is considered highly auspicious. In this month, Maa Durga is also worshipped as she is a form of Maa Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva. There is a popular legend behind worshipping Maa Durga on the Durga Ashtami. Once very powerful demons spread across the earth and began to conquer heaven. They killed many devi and devtas. The most powerful among them was the demon Mahishasura. To defeat them, Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Brahma, created the goddess Durga as a manifestation of Shakti. All the gods provided Goddess Durga with weapons and armour. Maa Durga then appeared on earth and destroyed the demons. Since then, the festival of Durga Ashtami has been celebrated.
