According to legend, there was once a powerful demon named Jalandhar, whose wife Vrinda was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. Her chastity made Jalandhar invincible. When his cruelty grew, the deities sought Vishnu’s help. Vishnu took Jalandhar’s form and broke Vrinda’s vow of purity, causing Jalandhar’s downfall and allowing Lord Shiva to destroy him. Angered by the deception, Vrinda cursed Vishnu to become a stone - and thus He manifested as the Shaligram Shila. Later, on Lakshmi’s request, Vrinda withdrew her curse and became a divine plant - Tulsi. Vishnu then declared that from that day on, the worship of Shaligram and Tulsi together would bestow complete spiritual fruit.
To honour this sacred union Shaligram Panchamrit Abhishek, Tulsi Vivah Pujan, and 11,000 Vishnu Dwadashakshari Mantra Jaap will be performed at the Shri Dirgh Vishnu Temple in Mathura. The ceremony will be done on Kartika Shukla Dwadashi with special chants, offerings, and Yagya invoking Lord Vishnu and Mata Tulsi’s blessings.
