In this ancient Rahu temple of Uttarakhand, Rahu is worshipped along with Lord Shiva. In very few temples in the country is the joint worship of Rahu and Shiva performed. It is believed that Rahu and Ketu are two parts of the body of the demon Swarbhanu.
At the time of Samudra Manthan, Swarbhanu drank the nectar (Amrit) by deceit. Then Lord Vishnu separated his head with the Sudarshan Chakra. Due to the effect of the nectar, he became immortal—his head was called Rahu and the torso was called Ketu. It is believed that Rahu’s head fell at this very spot, which is famous today as the Rahu temple.
Devotees come here for the peace of defects associated with Rahu. Prayers are offered especially for relief from Kaalsarp Dosha, Rahu-Ketu Dosha, and Rahu Mahadasha.
According to some beliefs, this temple was established by Adi Shankaracharya, while according to one story, the Pandavas built the temple here during their journey to heaven and worshipped Shiva and Rahu to avoid Rahu Dosha.
