Temple Significance - In this Rahu temple located in Uttarakhand, Rahu Dev is worshipped along with Lord Shiva. It is one of the rare temples in India where Rahu and Lord Shiva are worshipped together. It is believed that Rahu and Ketu are two parts of the demon Swarbhanu. According to the Puranas, during the Samudra Manthan, Swarbhanu deceitfully sat among the gods and consumed Amrit. When Lord Vishnu discovered this, he used the Sudarshan Chakra to separate Swarbhanu’s head from his body so that he could not become fully immortal. However, since he had already consumed Amrit, he became immortal. The lower part of his body came to be known as Ketu, while the severed head became Rahu. It is believed that Swarbhanu’s head fell at this very place in Pauri, where the Rahu temple was later established.
It is believed that devotees visit this temple to seek relief from various Rahu-related doshas, Kaal Sarp Dosha, Rahu-Ketu Dosha, and Rahu Mahadasha. Some scriptures also mention that this temple was established by Adi Shankaracharya. Another legend says that the Pandavas built this temple during their Swargarohini journey. It is believed that to protect themselves from Rahu Dosha, the Pandavas worshipped Lord Shiva and Rahu Dev at this very place.
