In Uttarakhand, the Shri Rahu Paithani Temple is one of the rare temples where both Lord Shiva and Rahu are worshipped together. According to legend, Rahu and Ketu are parts of the body of the demon Swarbhanu. During the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), Swarbhanu tricked the gods by drinking the nectar of immortality while sitting in their ranks. Lord Vishnu discovered this trick and cut off his head with his Sudarshan Chakra to prevent Swarbhanu from becoming immortal. However, due to the nectar he had consumed, Swarbhanu became immortal, and his head became Rahu, while his body became Ketu. The head of Swarbhanu fell at the site where the Rahu Temple now stands, in Paudi.
