In Hinduism, Ekadashi holds immense importance. The Ekadashi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Magha is known as Jaya Ekadashi. This Ekadashi is also referred to as Bhishma Ekadashi or Bhumi Ekadashi. The significance of this Ekadashi is described in the Padma Purana as well as other religious scriptures. Lord Krishna explained to Yudhishthira that worshiping Lord Vishnu on this day can absolve sins as grave as Brahmahatya (killing of a Brahmin), liberate one from Pitru Dosha, and free souls from the torment of Pishach Yoni. Lord Vishnu is regarded as the Pitru Adipati. According to astrology, if an individual’s horoscope indicates Pitru Dosha, then performing a Pitru Dosha Shanti Mahapuja and Ganga Abhishek on Jaya Ekadashi can bring peace to the ancestors' souls and blessings for relief from familial discord.
