Kashi is known as the sacred city of Lord Shiva, and it is believed that nothing happens here without the will of Bhairav Baba. He is revered as the Kotwal, or divine protector, of the entire city.
According to mythology, once a dispute arose between Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu regarding who was supreme. During the argument, the fifth head of Lord Brahma spoke disrespectfully about Lord Shiva, which angered Mahadev. From His divine wrath, Lord Kaal Bhairav manifested.
Lord Kaal Bhairav severed the fifth head of Lord Brahma, but the severed head remained attached to His hand. Lord Shiva then declared that Lord Bhairav had incurred the sin of Brahmahatya and would have to wander across the three worlds until He became free from it. It was said that wherever the head would finally detach from His hand, He would attain liberation from the curse.
When Bhairav Baba arrived in Kashi, the severed head fell from His hand, and He was freed from the sin. Thereafter, Lord Shiva appointed Him as the guardian and protector of Kashi.
Since then, it is believed that worshipping Lord Kaal Bhairav in Kashi helps remove sorrow, evil eye, negativity, and life’s obstacles while granting protection, courage, and peace.
