Once, King Parikshit went hunting in the forest and encountered Rishi Shamik, who was meditating in silence. Parikshit tried to talk to him, but the sage didn’t respond. Annoyed, Parikshit hung a dead serpent around the sage’s neck and left. The angry sage cursed him, saying that Takshak Naag would kill him in seven days. The curse came true, but Takshak Naag was spared. The day he survived became Naag Panchami.
