Shri Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is the fourth Jyotirlinga among the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva; it is considered a Swayambhu Linga. It is located on an island named Mandhata or Shivpuri in the middle of the Narmada River in the Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh. Here the Jyotirlinga exists in two forms. One of which is known as Mamleshwar and the other as Omkareshwar. Mamleshwar is located a short distance from Omkareshwar on the southern bank of Narmada. But despite being separate, they are counted as one. The pronunciation of Omkar first happened from the mouth of the creator Brahma. The recitation of Vedas also does not start without Om. It is believed that Mother Narmada also flows here in the shape of Om herself. According to the scriptures, all sins are removed just by the sight of Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga. In the Puranas, the glory of the Omkareshwar region is also mentioned in Skanda Purana, Shiv Purana, and Vayu Purana.
According to the mythological story, Bholenath comes here at night to sleep after traveling through the three worlds. It is said that this is the only temple on earth where Shiva-Parvati play Chaupar-Dice every day. Every day after the Shayan Aarti at night, Chaupar is spread here and the sanctum sanctorum is closed. It is a matter of surprise that in the temple where even a bird cannot flap its wings at night, every day the Chaupar is found scattered. This fact further increases the religious importance of this temple. This is the reason why there is special importance of visiting and worshipping Omkareshwar after visiting all the pilgrimages. Pilgrims bring water from all the pilgrimages and offer it in Omkareshwar, only then all the pilgrimages are considered complete otherwise they are considered incomplete.
