Kalighat Temple, located in Kolkata, West Bengal, is one of the 51 Shaktipeeths of Hinduism and is considered an extremely important pilgrimage site. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali, who is considered the goddess of power, energy, and destruction. According to mythological stories, the right toe of Goddess Sati fell here when Lord Shiva was performing Tandava with her body.
For this reason, this site is included in the extremely holy 51 Shaktipeeths. An idol of the fierce form of Goddess Kali is installed here in this temple. In this idol, Goddess Kali is seen with her foot on the chest of Lord Shiva and a garland of human skulls around her neck; she has an axe and some human skulls in her hands, and some human skulls are also tied around her waist. Her tongue is out and some drops of blood are dripping from the tongue. Notably, the tongue of Maa Kali in the idol is made of gold.
The present temple was built under the patronage of the Saborno Roy Choudhury family and Babu Kaliprasad Datta; its construction began in 1798 and was completed in 1809. The religious and cultural significance of Kalighat temple is also very great. This temple has been a center of attraction for devotees for hundreds of years, who come here to fulfill their wishes. By worshipping Goddess Kali in Kalighat, devotees get freedom from fear, evil, and negative energy and receive peace, prosperity, and success in life.
