Bhairav cut off the fifth head of Brahma Ji, which did not leave his hand. This was a Brahmhatya (sin of killing a Brahmin), from which Bhairav had to wander the creation for relief. Finally, in Ujjain, Brahma Ji's skull left Bhairav's hand and he was freed from Brahmhatya. Shiva Ji said that Bhairav has won over the cycle of time, so his name will be 'Kal Bhairav' and he will remain the Kotwal of Ujjain, since then he protects Ujjain and saves devotees from evil powers. Since then Kal Bhairav has saved Ujjain and his devotees from negative energies and obstacles. Talking about Kalabhairavashtakam, it is a powerful Ashtak composed by Shri Adi Shankaracharya. It is believed that this text is so powerful that even by just listening to it, evil powers do not wander near a person. To please Lord Bhairav, performing Kalabhairavashtakam along with Shri Bhairav Sarva Falprada Stotra Havan is considered extremely beneficial. It is believed that worshipping Kal Bhairav in Ujjain helps the devotee get relief from fear and also get the blessing of protection from physical instability. It is believed to be nearly six thousand years old and follows the left-hand Tantric tradition of worship. In ancient times, only Tantrics were allowed to enter the temple and perform special rituals. One of the most unique traditions here is offering liquor to Lord Bhairav — a custom that continues even today. Devotees bring bottles of liquor, pour some into a metal saucer, and hold it near the deity’s mouth. Miraculously, the liquor disappears as if the deity himself is drinking it.
No one knows exactly when or how this practice began, but it has continued for centuries. Locals and priests say they have seen this tradition since their childhood. To this day, every devotee who visits the temple offers liquor to Baba Kaal Bhairav as a mark of faith and devotion.
