Performing Pitru Shanti Puja on this day is believed to free ancestral unrest and bring blessings that heal generations, making it one of the most spiritually charged times of the year for household harmony. According to Hindu texts, Lord Ruru Bhairav is known as Gyaan-Bhairava (the Wise Guardian), He is described in the Bhairava Tantra and Rudra Yamala Tantra as “Pitru Rakshaka” - the protector of ancestral souls and giver of family peace. Seated on a swan and holding a rosary and trident, Lord Ruru Bhairav symbolises the balance of knowledge and devotion.
During this special Mahapuja at Shri Vikrant Bhairav Temple in Ujjain, 16 Kalash Jal Tarpan is performed to honour sixteen generational lines of ancestors. Each Kalash is filled with Ganga Jal, til (black sesame), and kusha grass, offered with the mantra “Om Ruru Bhairavaya Pitrubhyaḥ Shāntim Dehi.” This is followed by 11,000 Pitru Shanti Jaap and Til Daan Seva, which express gratitude and help release any lingering unrest.
