It is believed that the sound “Om” was first uttered by Brahma, the creator, and that Vedic recitations never begin without the chanting of “Om.” It is also believed that Maa Narmada herself flows here in the shape of the sacred “Om.” According to the scriptures, merely having darshan of Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga grants liberation from all sins. The glory of Omkareshwar is mentioned in the Skanda Purana, Shiva Purana, and Vayu Purana.
According to a legendary belief, after traveling through all three worlds, Lord Shiva comes here every night to rest. It is said that this is the only temple on Earth where Shiva and Parvati play Chaupar (a traditional dice game) every night. After the night aarti, the chaupad board is laid and the sanctum is closed. Astonishingly, the next morning, the board is always found disturbed—as if the game truly took place. This mystery further enhances the temple’s divine significance. It is believed that pilgrimage to all holy places is considered complete only after offering their sacred waters at Omkareshwar—otherwise, the pilgrimage remains incomplete.
