Shri Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is considered the fourth among the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. It is also considered a self-manifested Jyotirlinga. It is located on an island named Mandhata or Shivpuri situated in the middle of the Narmada River in the Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh. Here the Jyotirlinga is present in two forms—one as Omkareshwar and the other as Mamleshwar. The Mamleshwar temple is located a short distance away on the south bank of the Narmada River, but both are considered as a single Jyotirlinga. It is believed that the sound of Om (Omkar) first came from the mouth of Lord Brahma. The recitation of Vedas also does not begin without "Om". It is also believed that Mother Narmada flows here in the shape of 'Om'. It is stated in the scriptures that one gets freedom from sins just by having a sight of the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga. The glory of the Omkareshwar region is also described in the Skanda Purana, Shiva Purana, and Vayu Purana.
According to a mythological story, Lord Bholenath comes here to rest at night after traveling through the three worlds. It is also said that this is the only temple on Earth where Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati play Chaupar every day. After the evening Shayan Aarti, Chaupar is spread in the temple and the sanctum sanctorum is closed. Surprisingly, where no one can enter at night, the Chaupar is found scattered in the morning. This incident further increases the religious importance of this temple. This is the reason why visiting and worshipping at Omkareshwar is given special importance after traveling to all pilgrimage sites. Many devotees bring water from various pilgrimages and offer it here, only then is their pilgrimage considered complete.
