The Jyotirlinga here is worshipped in two forms—Mamleshwar and Omkareshwar. Mamleshwar is located on the southern bank of the Narmada River and is at a short distance from Omkareshwar, yet both are considered one Jyotirlinga. It is believed that the sound “Om” originated from the mouth of Lord Brahma, and the recitation of the Vedas also begins with “Om.” It is said that Maa Narmada flows here in the shape of “Om.” According to scriptures, merely having the darshan of Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga opens the path to liberation from sins. According to mythological belief, after traveling through all three worlds, Lord Shiva comes here at night to rest. It is said that this is the only temple on earth where Shiva and Parvati play chaupar (a traditional board game) every day. After the Shayan Aarti, the chaupar is laid out and the sanctum is closed. Surprisingly, in the morning, the chaupar is found in the same position, which reflects the divinity of this place.
