Kalighat Temple, located in Kolkata, West Bengal, is one of the 51 Shaktipeeths of Hinduism. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali, who is considered the goddess of power, energy, and destruction. According to mythological stories, the toe of Maa Sati's right foot fell here when Lord Shiva was performing Tandava with her body.
A statue of Goddess Kali in a fierce form is installed in this temple. In this statue, Goddess Kali is seen with her foot on the chest of Lord Shiva and wears a garland of human skulls around her neck; she has an axe and some human skulls in her hand, and some human skulls are tied to her waist. Her tongue is out and some drops of blood appear to be dripping from the tongue. Notably, Maa Kali's tongue in the statue is made of gold.
The currently existing temple was built under the patronage of the family of Sabarna Roy Choudhury and Babu Kaliprasad Dutta. Its construction began in 1798 and was completed in 1809. The religious and cultural significance of Kalighat Temple is also very great. This temple has been a center of attraction for devotees for many hundreds of years.
