Shri Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is the fourth among the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and is considered a self-manifested Linga. It is located on Mandhata or Shivpuri island in the middle of the Narmada River in the Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh. Here the Jyotirlinga is present in two forms. One is called Mamleshwar and the other is Omkareshwar. Mamleshwar is located a short distance from Omkareshwar on the southern bank of the Narmada. Despite being at different places, both are considered as one. The chanting of ‘Omkar’ first came out of the mouth of Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe. The recitation of Vedas also begins with ‘Om’. It is believed that the Narmada River itself flows here in the shape of ‘Om’. According to the scriptures, a person gets rid of all sins just by visiting the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga. The glory of the Omkareshwar region is described in the Skanda Purana, Shiva Purana, and Vayu Purana.
According to a mythological story, Lord Shiva comes here to rest at night after traveling through the three worlds. It is said that this is the only temple on earth where Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati play Chaupar every night. After the night's rest prayer, Chaupar is spread here and the sanctum sanctorum is closed. Surprisingly, no one can enter the temple at night, yet every morning the Chaupar is found scattered. This fact further increases the religious importance of this temple. For this reason, performing puja at Omkareshwar after visiting all other pilgrimages holds special significance.
