In the holy city of Kashi, Lord Shiva is seated in the form of Mahamrityunjaya, the conqueror of death. This temple is the only one in the country where Shiva is worshipped in this form, and its importance has been maintained by devotees for thousands of years.
According to the Puranas, the god of Ayurveda, Dhanvantari, once worshipped Lord Shiva at this temple. He poured herbs into the well that is present here, and received the blessing that Shiva would be seated in the form of Mahamrityunjaya and protect the devotees from untimely death and disease.
It is believed that by worshipping in this temple, even incurable diseases can be cured. Lord Shiva, who grants all perfections, also gives the boon of liberation to the devotees. People from all over the country come to this temple to worship Mahamrityunjaya Homaatmak Puja at the feet of Lord Shiva, in order to avoid incurable diseases and untimely death.
