Mithuna Sankranti is also known as Makara Sankramanam, occurs when the sun transits from Vrishabha (Taurus) to Mithuna (Gemini). The change of the Sun’s position is considered to be crucial according to the astrological effect. It is one of the twelve Sankranti days observed throughout the year, each marking the shift of the Sun from one zodiac sign to another. This particular Sankranti is celebrated with prayers, rituals, and devotion to Surya Dev (the Sun God) with early morning baths, Surya arghya (water offerings), and acts of charity. Initially, plans were made to construct a temple near the existing Lord Murugan temple in Pazhani. However, it was eventually decided to build the temple in Salem. On August 26, 1946, the foundation for the temple was laid, marking the beginning of its construction.
The temple was completed on January 23, 1961, and consecrated as the Sri Kavadi Pazhani Andavar Temple. Alongside the main sanctum, shrines for the Navagrahas (nine celestial deities) and other sacred spaces were added, and the Kumbhabhishekam (sacred consecration ceremony) was performed. On February 1, 1971, the temple further expanded with the construction of the majestic Raja Gopuram (royal tower) and shrines for Goddess Kali, the Sun, and Moon gods. The locals regard this temple as the 9th Padai Veedu (sacred abode) of Lord Murugan, making it a significant site of worship for devotees.
