The month of Sawan is considered the most sacred time for the worship of Lord Shiva. Impressed by the sincere devotion of Rishi Gautam, Lord Shiva appeared before him. Lord Shiva asked Sage Gautama to make a wish, and he requested the descent of the river Ganga to this place. Devi Ganga agreed to fulfil the sage's request on the condition that she would only come when Lord Mahadev resided in that place. Accepting Ganga's wish, Lord Shiva manifested himself as the Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga. Eventually, the Ganga River flowed there in the form of the Godavari River. Godavari is also known as Dakshin Ganga. It is believed that by visiting Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga, one's wishes are fulfilled, and they can attain liberation from sins committed in this and past lives.
