In Hinduism, the full moon (Purnima) tithi is considered extremely sacred and powerful. Worship performed on this day is especially fruitful, as it is regarded as the best day to worship Lord Chandra and Lord Shiva together. The relationship between Lord Chandra and Lord Shiva is very ancient and spiritual, mentioned in many Puranas. According to belief, King Daksha Prajapati had 27 daughters, all married to Lord Chandra. However, Lord Chandra was especially fond of Rohini and showed her more affection. Seeing this, the other wives became upset and complained to their father, King Daksha. Angered, King Daksha cursed Lord Chandra, causing his radiance to diminish and making him weak and ill. Then, the divine sage Narada advised him to seek refuge in Lord Shiva. Lord Chandra performed intense penance with devotion to Lord Shiva, and by Shiva’s grace, he regained his brilliance and health. He then requested Lord Shiva to wear him on His head. Pleased by his devotion, Lord Shiva placed the Moon on His crown. Since then, the Moon adorns Lord Shiva’s forehead.
The waxing and waning of the Moon symbolize the cycle of life. Its decline indicates old age and death, while its return to fullness represents new life, hope, and progress. For this reason, the Moon is called “Mrityu Sanharakaya” the one who conquers death. Lord Shiva is also the Mahamrityunjaya, the conqueror of death. Therefore, worshipping both together is considered a means to protect life and gain spiritual strength. The Nishit Kaal (midnight) on Jyeshtha Purnima is regarded as a very powerful time. During this auspicious moment, at Shri Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, an event is being organized with the chanting of 11,000 Mahamrityunjaya mantras, 10,000 Chandra Beej mantras, and a sacred Havan (fire ritual).
