Shri Khatu Shyam Ji is revered in Kaliyug as Barbarik, the great warrior from the Mahabharata. He was the grandson of Bhim and the son of Ghatotkach. Barbarik had taken a vow to always support the weaker side in battle, and he possessed three infallible arrows. When Lord Krishna, disguised as a sage, met him, he realized that Barbarikās vow could drastically change the course of the war and make it difficult to establish dharma. Krishna then asked for the offering of his head, which Barbarik willingly gave. Pleased with this supreme sacrifice, Lord Krishna blessed him, saying that in Kaliyug, he would be worshipped as Shyam, and anyone who remembers him with true devotion would have all their wishes fulfilled. It is believed that during the Mahabharata war, his head was placed at a specific location, which later manifested in Khatu, Rajasthan. Today, a grand temple stands at that very spot, where millions of devotees come for darshan with great reverence.
