The Sacred Story of Gaya
According to the Vayu Purana, Gaya is blessed by Lord Vishnu himself. Long ago, the demon Gayasur performed intense penance to please Lord Brahma. When granted a boon, he asked that anyone who touched his body would attain moksha (liberation). Chaos followed, as people abandoned dharma knowing liberation was assured. To restore balance, Lord Vishnu and the gods requested Gayasur to lie down so they could perform a great yajna on his body. When Gayasur began to move, Lord Vishnu placed the Dharmaranya (forest of righteousness) upon his head to hold him still. From that moment, Gaya became the most sacred place for Pitru Paksha rituals and ancestral worship.
