In Kaliyuga, Shri Khatu Shyam Ji is worshipped as the great Mahabharata warrior Barbarik, who was the grandson of Bhima and the son of Ghatotkach. Barbarik possessed three unfailing arrows and had taken a solemn vow that he would always support the weaker side in any battle. Upon learning of this vow, Lord Shri Krishna approached him in the guise of a sage. Realizing that Barbarik's participation in the war would make it difficult to uphold dharma, Krishna asked him for a supreme sacrifice, his head (sheesh daan). Without hesitation, Barbarik willingly offered his head in devotion and obedience. Pleased by this extraordinary act of selflessness, Shri Krishna blessed him, saying that in the age of Kaliyuga, he would be worshipped by the name "Shyam", and whoever remembers him with a sincere heart will have all their wishes fulfilled. It is said that his head was placed at a special vantage point to witness the Mahabharata war, and in time, that very sacred site emerged as Khatu in Rajasthan.
