According to legend, Rahu and Ketu are parts of the demon Swarbhanu’s body. During Samudra Manthan, Swarbhanu deceitfully sat among the gods and drank nectar. Lord Vishnu, realizing this, used His Sudarshan Chakra to behead him so he wouldn’t become immortal. Yet, since he had already consumed amrit, Swarbhanu remained immortal. His severed head became Rahu, while his lower body became Ketu. It is believed that Rahu’s head fell at this very spot in Pauri, which is why the shrine came to be known as Rahu Temple.
It is believed that worshipping at this temple helps remove afflictions caused by Rahu such as Kaal Sarp Dosha, Rahu-Ketu Dosha, and Rahu Mahadasha. Some traditions state that Adi Shankaracharya established this temple, while another legend attributes its foundation to the Pandavas during their Swargarohini Yatra, when they prayed here to Shiva and Rahu to be freed from Rahu dosha.
