The last day of Pitru Paksha, known as Sarva Pitru Amavasya, is the most sacred time to remember our forefathers. Scriptures tell us the story of Karna from the Mahabharata. After his passing, Karna reached the higher worlds, where he was offered gold and jewels as food. Confused, he asked Yama, the lord of death, why this was happening. Yama explained that though Karna had given generously during his life, he had never offered food and water to his ancestors. Since he did not know who his ancestors were, he was granted the chance to return to Earth for 15 days to perform shraadh and honour them. These days are now observed as Pitru Paksha, with the final day, Amavasya, dedicated to all ancestors, especially those we may have forgotten.
On this sacred day, we turn to Lord Vishnu, the protector of souls and the one who grants moksha (ultimate peace). At the holy Ganga Ghat in Haridwar, this special puja is performed, where the pure waters of the Ganga are believed to cleanse sins and carry our prayers directly to our ancestors. During the puja, chanting the Dwadakshari Mantra – “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” 11,000 times invokes divine energy, bringing peace to the departed and blessings to the family.
